The gear case is considered that part of the outboard below the mid section exhaust housing. The gearcase contains the propeller shaft, the driven and pinion gears, the drive shaft from the powerhead and the water pump. On models equipped with shifting capabilities, the forward and reverse gears, together with the clutch, shift assembly, and related linkage, are all housed within the case. The single most important task for proper gearcase maintenance is inspecting it for signs of leakage after each use. If oil can get out, then water can get in. And, water, mixing with or replacing the oil in the gearcase will wreak havoc with the shafts and gears contained within the housing. The second most important task for proper gearcase maintenance is checking and maintaining the oil inside the case. Not only is it important make sire the oil is at t k proper level not above or below , but it is important to check the oil for signs of contamination from moisture. Water entering the gear case will usually cause the oil to turn a slightly milky-white color. Also, significant amounts of water mixed with the oil will give the appearance of an overfilled condition.

Disconnect the battery during installation. Tighten nuts on the backclamp only slightly more than you can tighten with your fingers. Six inch-pounds of torque is sufficient. Overtightening may result in damage to the instrument and may void your warranty. The tachometer should be located at least 18″ from a magnetic compass. Some interference erratic operation may be noticed on the tachometer during radio transmissions.
Be certain to use stranded, insulated wire not lighter than 18AWG that is approved for marine use. Using a small screwdriver, SLIGHTLY depress and turn the selector switch on the back of the tachometer to the correct position to match the number of poles in the alternator see label on the side of the tachometer. Depressing the switch too hard may cause damage to the tachometer! Be sure the selector switch has locked into the detent at the correct position by slightly rotating the switch back and forth with the screwdriver.

There is a lot to consider when it comes to wiring. You need fuses and distribution blocks. Make sure the wire that you use after the fuse is rated for it or it will melt because of too much amperage coming through. In other words, you place a fuse in line, it will only let so much amperage through, make sure the wire after the fuse can handle the amperage passing through or you risk a fire hazard more to come.
As far as remote wiring schematics, take a look at the above picture. There are industry standards. I have found that the older Mercury’s don’t follow the standard. The tachometer wire should be gray; on Mercury’s, it is Brown. There are other differences and I will go into them. For now, I will limit this page to some facts. As I get time, I will place a write up on common boat wiring diagrams for accessories, lighting, gauges, etc.

I have had several Garmin units on boats and the “Engine” tab and “gauges” information might as well have not been there. I have been told by multiple boating industry people that a Yamaha gateway and complicated connections were required and that is was extremely difficult and time consuming to do. The connector on it is a proprietary Yamaha connector. Lowrance’s cable is made specifically to connect on one end to the Yamaha engine side plus and the other end is the standard NMEA drop cable.
You simply plug the cable in the engine and plug the other end into an existing NMEA network and the Garmin recognizes it instantly. I know there have been other threads about this stuff before, and I didn’t want to post a new thread for no reason.

May 18, at 3: I obviously fail because every time with wires connected, I get continuity. Richard I use a set of leads with alligator clips on them to set up the timing. One lead is clipped to ground while the other one is clipped to the small screw holding the wires onto the points. The reading in the first pic is with the points closed and the test circuit going thru the points to ground.
The reading in the second pic is with the points just opening and the circuit being thru the primary winding of the coil to ground hence the higher reading.
